Over the last forty-eight hours I have monitored #highered on Twitter. I was surprised the amount of chatter that was going on over that period. Someone is tweeting about job openings, ranking colleges, post-grad transition, challenges facing graduates, ways technology is changing the classroom. These were just a few of the topics tweeted about. I decided to leave Twitter opened on my computer for one hour while I worked on some other tasks and within that hour 53 new tweets on #highered. As of October 27th 2016 Twitter had roughly 317 million users. And 100 million daily active users.
One story that caught my eye was University students demand philosophers such as Plato and Kant are removed from syllabus because they are white. “The student union at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) insists that when studying philosophy “the majority of philosophers on our courses” should be from Africa and Asia”(Turner, 2017). One philosopher suggests their demands be ignorance. “If they think there is a colonial context from which Kant’s Critique of Pure Reason arose, I would like to hear”(Turner, 2017). This is nuts this is history we are talking, my thoughts you can’t learn about the past. These were influential philosophers back then and to ignore what they did is crazy especially if you are a philosophy major.
Another tweet that caught my eye was “BUY IT FOR LIFE: It takes until age 34 to earn back the cost of a US university degree.” “The average US bachelor’s degree recipient doesn’t recoup the cost of obtaining a degree—measured as tuition paid, plus wages lost from not being in the workforce for four years—until age 34”. (Wang, 2017). Seeing statistics like that has me cringing knowing that I currently don’t make a year what I owe in paying off all my college loans. Guess it will be a couple more years till I purchase my house, or I get a second job, LOL. Looking through trying to see if one person or business tweets out more then another. Companies like McGraw tweeting out about students finding mobile study to be essential in college. DWS promoting marketing. Education Dive “Maryland returns to the national spotlight in federal higher ed discrimination lawsuit: Judge to rule on remedies for generations of ‘separate but equal’ dual system of public higher education in the state” seems to be the ones that tweeted out the most.
